A sale of Bombardier's rail operations to Alstom would raise UK job fears Siemens itself might also seek to scupper the deal in revenge for the way Bombardier campaigned against its own deal with Alstom last year.Above all, Alstom is desperate to bulk up in order to compete more effectively with CRRC, a business whose ambitions were recently highlighted by news that it has approached the UK government with an offer to build the HS2 high speed rail link.It is also possible that a counter-bidder could emerge in the form of Hitachi of Japan.Yet this would also carry risks from a regulatory point of view because Hitachi owns Britain's only other remaining train manufacturing facility, at Newton Aycliffe in County Durham, which last year defeated Bombardier for a contract to build 400 new carriages on the East Midlands Railway owned by Abellio.At the time, Bombardier warned that its operations at Litchurch Lane might have to close by 2021 in the absence of new orders.Accordingly, however the situation unfolds, it looks to be an uncertain time for this most illustrious of manufacturers.

As a result, after only one decade in service, their replacement was considered, concurrent with the replacement of the older AEM-7 locomotive fleet, since a large order for a standardized fleet would have price economies, and the resultant fleet would have lower overall maintenance costs. Alstom and Bombardier operate in a very positive market environment with passenger traffic expected to grow between 3% to 5% annually over the 2015-2025 period and global rail OEM market expected to achieve a +3.0% CAGR between 2021-2023 [4]. The HHP-8 measures 67 feet 1 inch (20.45 m) long by 10 feet 4 inches (3.15 m) wide and stands 14 feet 2 inches (4.32 m) tall (from the rail to the locomotive roof, excluding the pantographs).

Alstom will also provide access to some interfaces and products for several signalling on-board units and train control management systems (TCMS) of Bombardier Transportation.

Waters" after a former administrator of the A big shake-up in train manufacturing is looming - with potential implications for thousands of British jobs.Alstom of France is close to announcing that it is buying the train operations of Canadian industrial group Bombardier, a company which in recent years has been in the headlines more for its Belfast-based aviation business, Northern Ireland's biggest private sector employer.However, the $7bn (£5.4bn) deal will raise many questions about jobs in countries where the pair both operate, which includes Britain.Bombardier's rail operations in the UK employ 5,000 people, half of whom work at the Litchurch Lane works in Derby, which has been producing rolling stock since 1876 and which is the UK's oldest train manufacturing facility.The plant, which temporarily switched to the production of aircraft such as Lancaster bombers during the Second World War, is currently building Aventra electric trains for use on London's Crossrail and Overground network.Alstom no longer makes trains in the UK, having closed its plant at Washwood Heath in Birmingham - birthplace of the Pendolino tilting train - as long ago as 2004, but it still employs more than 2,000 people in train service and maintenance across various locations in the UK.So naturally, if Alstom buys Bombardier Transportation, there will be concerns about cost saving measures.The first is that Montreal-based Bombardier, which is labouring under a debt mountain of $9.7bn, has been selling various parts of its business in order to reduce its borrowings.Last year it sold its regional jet programme to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan for $750m.It has also sold its aerostructures business, including its wing-making operations in Belfast, to Spirit AeroSystems of the US for more than $1bn in cash and debt.Then, last week, it sold its remaining stake in the A220 narrow-bodied aircraft programme, previously known as the C-Series, to its partner, Airbus, which The sales have generated unhappiness in parts of Canada for the way in which, according to critics, the country's leading manufacturer has been 'dismantled'.At the end of the disposals process, Bombardier will have quit commercial aviation altogether, leaving it focused on corporate jets - a sector in which it owns the Learjet, Challenger and Global Express names.Bombardier's rail operations, though, have arguably been even more problematic than its commercial aviation business.Profits in the division have been wiped out by a string of late-delivery penalties to customers that include London Overground, Deutsche Bahn in Germany and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), operator of the New York subway.The latter provided Bombardier's most recent high-profile embarrassment when, last month, MTA was forced to take 300 carriages built by the company out of service for more than two weeks because their doors were not working properly.Scott Stringer, the New York City Comptroller, said the contract was 35 months behind schedule and the city had still not received the full fleet of 300 cars.Despite these mishaps, Bombardier has continued to attract new orders, leaving its rail division with a current backlog of orders totalling $36bn.The problem is that the business tried to take on too much - a major expansion in rail orders and developing the new C-Series aircraft - without adequate management in place or adequate finances.For Alstom, meanwhile, Bombardier Transportation would be a more-than-satisfactory consolation prize after it tried and failed last year to merge with the rail division of German industrial giant Siemens.The deal was heavily promoted by both the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, as it would create a European-owned global champion that would rival CRRC of China as the world's largest train maker.Mr Macron went so far as to say that the combined entity would be "Airbus on rail".
