The main character Perowne is interesting and the scenes at the squash court and in the operating theatre are enthralling. I was astounded by the ability to take what is a normal series of events and make it extraordinary; without saying that it is so.

You should listen, though. This book is no exception, of course it isn't.

Saturday brilliantly depicts life in a post 9/11 environment and successfully portrays a world of divergent but understandable differences.

After a very slow start and masses of set-up, this story became compelling and posed a really interesting moral dilemma at the end. Highly recommended and very prescient for even today's climate of uncertainty!!

I always feel that when l have finished one of Ian McEwan books that l cannot wait to begin the next. I just love McEwens style and the fact that all his books are quite different but this one comes out my favourite.

The characters are believable and solid.

This being McEwan, the accident eventually hardens into something much darker and involves questions of how humane and civilised men might confront terror to protect things they hold dear.

I read this at another's recommendation, as a reprieve from my marriage to fantasy fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and also the insight into the complexities of neurosurgery. I can see why some reviewers write this novel off as a "non-event" but it is this very sub-normality tension that I find so gripping in an Ian McEwan novel, and this, for me, is one of his best alongside Enduring Love. I wish I was eloquent enough to write a proper review, dissecting the various characters and discussing the themes of the book. Though 5 stars is probably expected of a best seller, it is reflective of my experience reading this tale.

But saying that, I wanted them to return to their comfort afterwards, so there must have been some empathy there, even though none of them seemed to have learned anything from the experience.

Dolowayみたいで、一日の時間の流れをヘンリーの心の動きで追っています。早朝から飛行機の緊急着陸の瞬間を窓から見たり、気難しい義父の訪問と米国から帰国する娘の帰宅を夜に控えていたり、サスペンス的な緊張感が漂っています。精神的に休まらないヘンリーですね。そしてバクスター。どう読めば良いのか、全体的にマキューアンさんの小説はハイブローを読者に想定して、ハイブロー読者の世界を扱っています。バクスターはエイリアンみたいに突然登場しますよね。扱い方は難しいし、ヘンリーには無理な相手でした。庶民に同情的な感覚はないですね。社会的な階級の壁が強い印象で残りました。小ぶりな作品で興味深いです。

I found this book very informative if somewhat implausible.

And the answers, in this profound and urgent novel, are never less than surprising. Rather than simple distraction, it can offer you a perspective you may have never know; if you let it.
